Governor Linda Lingle and Shai Agassi, Founder and CEO of Better Place , recently announced an agreement to build a pilot electric car network in the state of Hawaii, similar to what’s being set up in California 1.

Better Place seems to be doing well. With programs already working in Denmark, Israel and Australia, a U.S. takeover seems impending with two states now agreeing to support the institution of a battery-powered transportation system.

Hawaii seems a perfect choice too with plenty of natural resources that can be used to produce renewable energy in many forms, whether solar, wind, geothermal or wave. Being situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, any goods imported are more expensive there as well, especially gas.

According to Better Place, Hawaii will see their first charging stations, along with a batch of electric cars, within a year and a half. As many as 100,000 public charging are being planned to be installed across parking lots and side streets between the scheduled commencement and 2012. If these ventures are successful, a nationwide electric highway definitely becomes a much closer reality than the seeming pipe dream it seems now for many.
